Review Witching and Bitching a.k.a. Las brujas de Zugarramurdi (2013)

 genre: comedy, horror

As you might suspect something is going with the title from director Alex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast 1995). It seems the director is trying to put in a social commentary or he simply is crying out for help since he has some serious issues. I don't think the latter is the case but as a social commentary the humour is too easy and in my opinion fails a bit. Alex de la Iglesia makes a mockery of relationships and love in such a way that you do get the suspicion someone in his life has hurt him pretty badly. Most women in this film are portrayed as bitches. Even the men dressed up as women were. To be fair. The men also get their share of criticism and abuse. Most of them are being portrayed as pendejos, idiots. He doesn't seem to like children also because where in one moment they represent innocence in the other they stand for pure evil. You can imagine that this way it is real hard to like a character because none of them evoke much sympathy. When it eventually happens it does not matter much since chaos and mayhem rules the screen and you have to pay real attention to the events. Now don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment. Because moments of brilliance in creepiness and weirdness are so overwhelming it is hard not to like what you see. The witches are a force to be reckoned with and you will get to see them into action as they are supposed to be. Definitely one of the highlights. The pace is fast and here and there it drags just a little. However overall Witching and Bitching is top notch and one of the better horror comedies that has to be seen at least once.
