Review The Bullet Vanishesa.k.a. Xiao shi de zi dan (2012)

genre: crime, thriller, action

The Bullet Vanishes could be interpreted as a Chinese version of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes only much more serious and less action. The mystery that needs to be solved is more clearer yet also like the one in both Sherlock Homes films it is lacking substantial suspense. I couldn't care less about the mystery that was presented to us. Just telling that it is important is not enough. The audience has to be drawn in. And that simply happens far too late. Giving The Bullet Vanishes a somewhat underwhelming climax. The main characters Nicholas Tse and Lau Wong are doing their best with the material that is given to them and it is because of them that the events stay interesting. It’s therefore a shame that they are let down by the director that never truly succeeds in making it a thrilling affair. A missed opportunity to truly outshine Ritchie’s take on sleuthing although I must say that it came pretty close.
